Green Week update

Misereor is helping children to survive

The Catholic aid agency Misereor is inviting Green Week visitors to what is most certainly the world’s smallest restaurant. Exquisite, hip meals of outstanding quality and in a miniature format are being prepared here, including a mini-hamburger with 380 kilo-calories. For many undernourished African children this is exactly the amount of calories that they obtain from a day’s food consumption. One in every four children under the age of five around the world is undernourished and some 815 million people suffer hunger. Our “Micro Meals” campaign is intended to draw attention to hunger in the world. As part of our Misereor project in South Africa, a 2 euro donation will provide children there with roughly enough food for a week. “Misereor helps them”, says Elisabeth Klefter, who works for Misereor. In addition to providing sport, games, music and theatre, members of the project team assist children and young people in their everyday lives, and social workers support the young people in attaining school-leaving qualifications.

Uzbekistan is presenting fruit, wine and the national dish, “plov”

“We are represented with a larger stand at the Green Week this year because we want to make our appearance at this fair more effective, as well as developing our export potential”, explains Nodirbek Barnaev, Chief Specialist for Exhibitions at the State Investment Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Contributing to the display on the Exhibition Grounds are Uzagro, which is responsible for fruit and vegetable exports, the fruit processor UzOOX, and Uzvinosanoat Holding, representing the producers of wines and spirits, and contracts have already been signed to supply wine and dried fruit to customers in Europe. Visitors also have the opportunity to sample the Uzbek national dish, “plov” (rice with beans, carrots and beef) on the stand.

Special tea-tasting on the Nepal stand

“Special tea-tasting” states the sign on the Nepal stand at the fair. “For the first time visitors to the fair can also sample our tea here”, comments Sahayog Newa. All 33 varieties can be tasted. He reports that growing numbers of regular customers are coming, and that they also want to buy and try new varieties. However, the range that is available to sample is also of interest to those keen tea drinkers who have not yet discovered Nepalese tea. There has been a very good response to the new range, according to Sahayog Newa, with almost everyone who has tried them making a purchase. One particular speciality is the high quality white tea, which is made by only harvesting and processing the three top leaves. This variety made its world debut in the display at the International Green Week 2016. The most popular choices among the visitors continue to be green and black tea, followed by herb tea such as jyoti, a mixture of cinnamon, green and black cardamom, ginger, liquorice, nutmeg flowers, beetroot, cinnamon leaves, long and black pepper as well as cloves.

Cote d’Ivoire is offering potency-boosting roots

Using the slogan “Made in Cote d’Ivoire” and under the flag of the West African country, Key-Gate GmbH is exhibiting at the Green Week, and alongside its local joint venture Roche Group Diegonefla there are six federations representing every branch of agriculture and around half a million farmers in the Cote d’Ivoire. They exhibitors also include the women’s organisation PFACI, representing over 80,000 women farmers. Ivorian coffee under the “Diegonefla” brand name is available and can be sampled on the stand, as can bofloto, a deep-fried sweet dessert made with flour, sugar and vanilla. Other products on display include caramelised coconut and peanuts, cola nuts, cacao beans and shea butter. One “inside tip” is the cure-dent-gouro root, which is chewed by local people, but not only for cleaning their teeth. It is also reputed to boost potency. “We already sold ten kilos on the first day”, reports Key-Gate CEO Frank E. W. Fromme.

Morocco presents cooperative agriculture

Morocco’s display at the International Green Week ranges from olives to sophisticated luxury foods. Twenty agricultural cooperatives are advertising their products to the visiting public and to commercial buyers. The items on offer include couscous made from durum wheat, barley or millet, which is harvested and processed by the all-women cooperatives. “Women can do it better”, says Hassan Sefrioui from the Sopexa marketing agency, which is coordinating the display. Women have also joined forces, with 115 of them in the Tarwany olive cooperative. This project is the result of a joint venture between the USA and Morocco which is aimed at enabling women to find employment. It has been financed by grants, whereas many other cooperatives are operating profitably. Some of them also benefit financially from the Moroccan “Green Plan”, among them the Mtiwa Nabate cooperative, which produces 80 tonnes of olive oil annually from groves currently occupying 1,500 hectares close to the Atlas mountains. All these products, including choice caraway seeds and paprika, as well as mixed spices for chicken and beef dishes, can be purchased directly at the Green Week. Alternatively visitors can sample them at the restaurant in the middle of the stand, where the chef Rahal is using them in typical local dishes. Not only food is on offer: there is also a small tattoo-to-go studio, where delicate floral patterns are applied to the skin free of charge and utterly painlessly. “However, they will completely disappear in two weeks”, says Defrioui.

From the parliament in Nairobi to the exhibition stand in Berlin

Josuah Kandie does not actually have any time to be present on his stand at the Green Week, as he used to in the past. Last August he was elected to the Kenyan parliament to represent his home district of Baringo Central. Together with the aid organisation ProKapsogo, based in Augsburg, he has been committed to helping the region by constructing schools and supplying emergency vehicles. He has now initiated a partnership with the small town of Gersthofen in northern Swabia, which has donated funds to completely equip a school and in March will be sending a delegation to Africa, headed by the mayor. Kandie hopes that his work in parliament will result in even more support for one of the country’s poorest regions. His efforts include a programme for training young people in handicrafts, working together with the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ). Nevertheless, Kandie intends to remain true to the Green Week, where he sells coffee, tea, beer and handicrafts from his homeland. He is making use of this year’s participation to familiarise his wife with the trade fair business, and is also hoping to persuade the authorities in Nairobi to support an official display by Kenya at the IGW.

Products like long ago from Brandenburg

The present-day aroma in the Exner bakery recalls the past. And the three new products developed by Tobias Exner and his team specially for the Green Week and to mark the 90th anniversary of his bakery taste like a trip down memory lane. The new types, “Wie damals” (Like Long Ago), “Das Beste” (The Best) rolls and “Oma Hedis Käsetörtchen” (Grandma Hedi’s Cheese Tartlet) are being presented to visitors as the start of an anniversary year with many activities being planned for by this bakery, based in Beelitz. They have been exhibiting at the Green Week since 2013, and always with a new speciality created by themselves. “In the best possible way the Green Week presents us with a challenge every year”, says Tobias Exner. The anniversary bread “Wie damals”, for example, is based on a special rye sour dough, with a spelt starter, roasted barley and oats, ingredients that were available in the region back in 1928 and were widely used then.
