Winners of the first Startup Day at the Green Week 2018: Startups provide market access to local honey, laying hen and fish products

The winners of the first Startup Day at the International Green Week have been announced. The first prize went to nearbee (https://nearbees.de/), a Munich-based website marketing honey products from local producers all over Germany. ’Find honey next door’ is their slogan, which targets retailers and consumers alike. The second prize went to bickus (https://www.bickus.de/) from northern Hesse. This is the name under which several farms have formed a company processing meat from laying hens when they no longer lay eggs, rather than leaving them to the industry. And lastly, the panel awarded third prize to Hiddenseer Kutterfisch (https://www.hiddenseer-kutterfisch.de/), a canned fish company from Rügen, which apart from devoting itself to promoting local products also campaigns for gillnetting in the waters around the island.

With the introduction of the Startup Day the International Green Week has placed the spotlight on food industry startups. The aim is to help kickstart businesses by providing contacts with established stakeholders in the food retail sector, other experts and opinion-formers as well as investors, project and sales partners. That is why the winners are not awarded prize money but services instead, such as consultations with retail food chains, free participation in the Green Week 2019 and presentation slots at federation conference events where important decision-makers from this market meet. Thus, at the Green Week the Federal Association of German Startups and the German Farmers’ Union are cooperating to bring agrotechnology startups into contact with the farming industry.

More than 50 companies took up the invitation to participate in the Startup Day, of which 20 were chosen by Messe Berlin for the final round. At the Professional Center they each delivered a five-minute pitch to a selection panel of six judges, among them representatives of the retail sector, food industry experts as well as members of companies supporting startups.
