First Startup Day at Green Week
20 new entrepreneurs to hold pitches in the final on 24 January
Giving startups a boost: on 24 January 2018 at the Professional Center at the International Green Week Berlin (19 – 28 Jan.) the focus will be on food industry startups. After drawing up a longlist from over 50 entries Messe Berlin has chosen 20 companies to contest the final, where they will be able to present their business ideas and products to industry professionals and the jury. The entrepreneurs in question will each deliver a five-minute pitch on their product, for example organic cider from Lake Constance, an insect snack made from crickets, a website marketing local honey, ice cream made from frozen cocktails, and edible drinking straws. The presentations will take place over the course of three sessions: ’Beverages and more’ (10.45 a.m. – 12 noon), ’Fruit, vegetables and other delicacies’ (12.45 – 2 p.m.) and ’Meat, fish and alternative products’ (2.45 – 4 p.m.). The winners will be announced at 5 p.m.
The jury is made up of representatives of the retail trade, experts from the food industry and organisations promoting startups. They include Dr. Christian Bock, Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank; Karina Bostelmann, FOOD & FARM; Gabriele Giesler, editor of Men's Health/Women's Health; Hendrik Haase, a blogger and food activist; Markus Reh, Edeka-Minden; and Stephanie Sabet, managing director of the Federation of German Food and Drink Industries.
As the venue for Startup Day presentations the Professional Center is reserved exclusively for trade visitors, exhibitors and the press. By taking part in the Startup Day food industry startups, regardless of their development phase, will be able to meet decision-makers from the food retail sector, other experts and opinion-formers as well as investors, project and sales partners. They will also benefit from the wide media attention the fair attracts.
